Who we are:
We exist for everyone. Whether you identify as LGBTQIA+ or not, we work to provide a safe and inclusive space.
If you don’t identify as LGBTQIA+ but still want to support the community, you are an Ally, and you are welcome in our society.
You may or may not be “out”, or might only have told a select few people how you identify. Maybe you haven’t figured out exactly how you want to define yourself, or you’d rather not choose a label. There is no obligation to do any of that. You are welcome in our society.
If you do openly identify as LGBTQIA+, you might want to meet some other people who do, too. Maybe you’ve had experiences you want to talk about, or you want to discover more about the community. There might be terms you’re unfamiliar with, or you might have knowledge you can share with others. You are welcome in our society.
In fact, whoever you are, as long as you’re open minded, friendly and non-judgmental, we’d be happy to have you.
And our membership list is completely confidential. If you don’t want to tell anyone you’re a part of our society, you don’t have to.
What we do:
We organise social events where open-minded people can get together. They are times when you don’t have to worry about being yourself. You can relax and make new friends in a safe space. It might be some of us getting breakfast somewhere nice, or board game nights, or arts and craft sessions. We’re open to suggestions, so if there’s anything you’d like to try, let us know. We plan to attend Pride and other organised events, and we’ll let you know how you can join us.
Providing information is very important to our society. There are so many terms and concepts that are confusing to a lot of people, with LGBTQIA+ issues under- and mis-represented in media. We contribute to the CU Scarborough newsletter and have regular updates on the Student Union noticeboard
If you just want someone to talk to, or you need some advice, we’re often on campus to help. It doesn’t even have to be about LGBTQIA+ issues. Just keep an eye out for the rainbow lanyards our officers wear, or the pin badges available to our members. You can email us, too, if there’s any reason you can’t approach us in person.
We’ll also be fundraising and campaigning to raise awareness, so keep an eye out for our brightly coloured tables at University events.
