As assessment time approaches, remember that if something serious happens, like an illness, accident, or bereavement, you might be able to get extra time to submit your work.
The University calls this an Extenuating Circumstance Request (ECR).
There are two types of ECRS;
- Extension -up to 5 extra days to submit your coursework.
- Deferral – moves your assessment or exam to the next available date, which can be in a few months.
To apply for an ECR, submit an ECR form before your deadline, along with evidence.
How do I apply?
Use the online ECR form for your campus:
Grace Period:
The University gives you a 24-hour grace period for coursework, just in case of technical issues or other unforeseen problems. This isn’t guaranteed and should be used at your own risk. It doesn’t apply to extensions, exams, tests, or presentations.
Important notes:
- Deferrals are without teaching.
- You can’t ask for exam extensions, only deferrals.
- You can’t choose the next assessment date, so deferrals might delay your progress or graduation.
- The maximum extension is 5 days.
- If you are an international student, deferring might affect your visa. Contact the visa help team at your study location for advice if you’re thinking of deferring:
Your Student Union Advice Service can proofread your ECR statement if you send it least 3 days before the deadline. Please send your statement and any evidence to us here.
