Get to Know the Firework Code

Fireworks are a fun and eye-catching way to celebrate, whether it's for a specific holiday, or just because! However, they can also be dangerous if not handled properly: see here for the West Midlands Police 'Firework Code', which they've shared with us to give you all the info you need to handle fireworks safely and responsibly.

It’s that time of the year again: with Diwali and Bonfire Night just around the corner, it’s likely you’ll be seeing firework displays lighting up the night sky and you might even be planning one of your own!

However, it’s important to remember that fireworks aren’t just pretty things to look at: they can be dangerous if you don’t know the best practices to handle them safely as the ‘fire’ in ‘fireworks’ is there for a reason.

The West Midlands Police have asked us to share this useful guide to help you learn about the Firework Code. It has all you need to know to keep everyone safe while you start your celebrations off this season.

  1. Do NOT buy fireworks from UNLICENCED retailers. These fireworks may be unsafe and illegal.
  2. Only buy fireworks that comply with current safety standards.
  3. Always keep fireworks in a closed box. Take them out one at a time and close the box.
  4. Never put fireworks in your pocket.
  5. Be considerate. Let your neighbours know you will be having a display, especially if they are elderly or they have pets or children.
  6. Avoid setting fireworks off late at night, particularly if it is a school night.
  7. Ensure all nearby pets are safe – both yours and others.
  8. Carefully follow the instructions on EACH firework. Never go back to a lit firework unless the instructions advice otherwise.
  9. Never throw fireworks; it is dangerous.
  10. Light fireworks one at a time, at the end of the fuse, and at arms’ length.
  11.  Light sparklers one at a time and wear suitable gloves, even when lighting them.
  12. Never give sparklers to a child under the age of five.
  13. Never throw spent fireworks on a bonfire.
  14. Search WMP fireworks for more information and advice.

Remember: Fireworks are small explosives, and it’s very important to make sure they’re handled with care. As long as you follow the Firework Code and act sensibly and responsibly, you’ll be able to enjoy those dazzling displays that much more, knowing that you’re doing what you can to reduce the risks so everyone else can enjoy them in safety and comfort, too. Stay safe and have fun!
