What is a sexually transmitted infection (STI)?

Sexually transmitted infections are infections caused by certain bacteria or viruses that can be passed from person to person through blood, semen and other bodily fluids. STI’s are common and are usually passed on through unprotected sex or sexual contact.

Why is it important to know about STI’s?

Sexually transmitted infections can really affect your quality of life. From stigma and mild discomfort, through to long term health complications. There are over 30 different sexually transmitted infections and not all of them have symptoms. Common STI’s that can be present with no symptoms can include chlamydia, gonorrhoea, genital herpes, HPV, and syphilis. Add to this the fact that syphilis rates are currently at their highest since World War 2, it’s really important that you get diagnosed and treated as soon as possible.

General recommendations state that:

- Everyone who has sex with new or casual partners but don’t use condoms should get regular STI screenings, plus a test for HIV at least once a year.

- Sexually active people with a uterus or ovaries should screen for chlamydia each year or when they change partners.

- Gay, bisexual, or other men who have sex with men should test for STIs and HIV every 3 months if having sex without a condom with new or casual partners.

- If you’re sexually active, don’t assume it will never happen to you.

How can I make sure I’m protected against STI’s?

The best way to protect against sexually transmitted infections in the moment is to use a condom. However, if you do need to test for STI’s, accessing testing kits is simple, safe and fast. SH.UK is a free online sexual health service offering STI testing, treatment and contraception across the UK. Using the service couldn’t be easier.

1. Go to SH.UK

2. Fill in your details and complete the short online consultation.

3. Order your free testing kits and/or contraception; they will be despatched the same day.

4. Receive your free testing kits and/or contraception right to your door, quickly and discretely.

5. Be kept informed via text or email. The SH.UK clinical team will let you know about the progress of your order, test and results and will support you further if needed. No waiting around or worrying.
