February is LGBT History Month. This month the society, along with the SU, will be running lots of LGBT History themed events.
LGBT+ History month is a time to reflect on LGBT+ rights, the civil movements that have taken place in the past, how far the community has come, and how much there still is to do to help the community. The theme this year is ‘behind the lens’, with the aim of celebrating LGBT+ people’s hard work and contributions made to the production of film and cinema from ‘behind the lens’.
LGBT History Month was first celebrated in the UK in 2005 and is celebrated in February because in February 2003 section 28 was abolished, a policy that prohibited the “promotion” of homosexuality.
Some of the events that are being put on in honour of LGBT History Month within the Union are film screenings, craftivism, poetry and guest speakers, as well as many more events.
