Step Up, Stand Out: Why You Should Run in the Societies Committee Elections!
Societies are at the heart of the student experience—bringing together people, ideas, and passions to create lasting memories, meaningful impact, and strong communities. Whether you're an active member or someone who's curious about getting involved, there’s never been a better time to take that next step: run for a committee position in your society!
But why should you get involved, and what does leading a society really offer? Let’s break it down.
Why Join a Society?
Joining a society is more than just attending socials or events—it's about discovering new interests, meeting like-minded individuals, and becoming part of a supportive, dynamic community. Societies offer a chance to:
✅ Make friends beyond your course
✅ Learn new skills and discover talents you never knew you had
✅ Feel part of something meaningful during your time at university
✅ Get involved in fun, educational, or career-focused activities
At Your SU, we believe in being inclusive—every student, no matter their background, interests, or experience level, is welcome and valued in society spaces.
Why Lead a Society?
Taking on a committee role is one of the most rewarding things you can do at university. It’s your chance to shape your society’s future, develop leadership skills, and leave a legacy. As a society leader, you’ll:
🎯 Gain hands-on experience in event planning, budgeting, communication, and team management
🤝 Collaborate with SU staff and other student leaders to drive initiatives forward
💼 Boost your CV with real-world skills employers value
🌍 Create an environment where others feel empowered, welcomed, and included
We’re committed to being helpful, and that means you won’t be doing it alone. From training and resources to 1:1 support from the Activities Team, we’ll be right there with you.
What Makes a Great Committee Member?
You don’t have to be the loudest in the room or have previous experience—just a willingness to contribute, support your peers, and make a difference. Leading with integrity and being ethical in your approach to decisions and leadership helps foster a culture of fairness and transparency in your society.
Whether you're considering a role as President, Treasurer, Secretary, Events Officer, or any other position, your input matters and can transform the student experience for others.
